Questions and Answers
Here are some commonly asked questions
about caring for your cedar shake roof in the northern Illinois
region. To see more photographs of cedar shake roof
conditions and Worksharp's solutions, see
Portfolio.
How long should my cedar shake roof last?

Your cedar shake roof can last up to 20 years in our Midwest region.
However, our premium treatment can lengthen your roof's life by penetrating the shake's surface and
inhibiting the growth of wood destroying organisms.
What signs of deterioration can I see?
Much of the deterioration occurs long before the naked eye can see
it. Sure signs that your roof needs treatment are lackluster,
"curled," or "cupped," split and discolored shakes. These conditions
are due to fungus growth and weather conditions.
If I can see damage already, is it too late?
Only a professional inspection can determine the extent of the
damage. But don’t delay. With cleaning, repair and
application of Wood Preservation System, your cedar shake roof can be
preserved for years to come.
What kind of wood destroying organisms are there?
There are eight major organisms that threaten the life of your roof.
These are fungi, mold, smut, mildew, moss, algae, liverwort and
lichen.
What causes these organisms to grow?
The four major contributors to fungal growth are oxygen, moisture,
temperature and a food source, which is your shake shingles.
How can I prevent these organisms from growing?
The application of a fungicide prevents the organisms from growing
within the shakes. Because Worksharp’s application is guaranteed for
a period of five or ten years, your choice. That's the Worksharp
guarantee.
Is your solution environmentally safe?
Yes! Our solution and brush system have been successfully tested by
Forest Products Laboratory. And, not only are our preservatives approved by
the American Wood Preserver’s Association,
but also listed in the AWPA’s book of standards.
What other care does my cedar shake roof need?
Your roof needs cleaning, replacing of damaged shakes, tightening
of loose shakes and inspection of flashing and skylights. See
"Process”
for details on our thorough services.
Why did one of your competitors recommend restoring the color of my
cedar shake roof with a color-enhancing dye?
Many shake roof treatments are only providing temporary protection
against sun and water. With proper prevention and preservation, your
roof will age naturally and beautifully to its characteristic
silvery hue—without artificial dyes.
What’s more, real estate agents have reported that luxury homes with
unnaturally colored shake roofs are harder to sell.
